Over a thousand pubs and clubs across the UK and Ireland have already signed up for the Sky 3D service, invested in 3D-ready TV sets in a deal brokered by Sky with set manufacturer LG will be showing the live match next month. The launch of the channel, which is Europe’s first dedicated 3D channel, on Sky’s Electronic Programme Guide, will mean that sky customers who have a 3D TV set, will also be able to access the channel in their homes from next month. The channel is compatible with Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic 3D sets.

The channel, which will be listed on the HD part of the programme guide and has yet to be assigned a number, can only be accessed by Sky customers who subscribe to Sky’s top channels and HD pack and have a 3D TC set and 3D glasses. Those customers need to call sky’s general customer service number with details of their TV in order to activate the channel.

Initially the 3D channel will only show a further five premier league football matches before the end of the current season (May 9), which have yet to be announced, and the test of the airtime will be taken up by promotional snippets from the best of sky’s 3D content – which will become available on an unconfirmed date during the second half of the year. When the channel does roll our fully into homes, it will offer a range of movies, sport, documentaries, entertainment and arts content – which have all been specially shot in 3D.

The channel will actually appear on the Sky’s menu before April 3 and customers with 3D Tv sets and right package can contact sky during this period to access the preview content

What is HD?

Posted on | February 17, 2010

HD-logoNot everyone understands what HD is…. We thought we would put a quick blog together to help our customers understand HD.

High-definition television (or HDTV, or just HD) refers to video having resolution substantially higher than traditional television systems (standard-definition TV, or SDTV, or SD). HD has one or two million pixels per frame; roughly five times that of SD

But what does this mean for you?

  • 5x more picture detail and incredibly vibrant colour
  • Immerse yourself in the drama with superb quality digital sound
  • Watch up to 37 amazing HD channels (available on Sky TV)

We get a few customers asking about HD so here is a quick Q&A. Hope it helps ;)

What makes a HD TV ready?

  • An HD ready TV must have HDMI or DVI connectivity in order to accept a digital signal from the HD receiving equipment, as well as an analogue Component (YpbPr) connection. It must also be able to handle the 720 or 1080 line formats.

Why do I need a HD TV?

  • In order to enjoy high definition programmes you must have a HD Ready TV. Sky have already started broadcasting in high definition, via their Sky HD service, with lots of great programmes now seen and heard as never before. You can now enjoy a host of your favourite programmes, films, and sporting events in breathtaking quality.

Can I have HD on my old TV?

  • You will not be able to watch HD pictures on your old TV unless it is HD ready. It is worth noting, however, that when analogue signals are switched off, in order to keep watching TV you will need a TV with integrated digital tuner or a digital receiver such as Freeview, cable TV or Sky.

Why replace my TV now with a HD Ready TV?

  • If you are looking to buy a new TV now future-proof yourself with a HD TV. You will get a superb TV and be ready for the future of TV pictures when HD broadcasts go live in the UK. Amazing pictures, fantastic sound, stunning technology…Why wait?

Why not watch the Saturday football right from your mobile. The picture quality is amazing and the price is too.

The best part is you are not tied into any contract, if you feel you’re not using it enough after a month you can cancel it at any time.
